Markets, Value Chains, Certification & Food Security
The price a farmer receives and the price a consumer pays are often worlds apart, and the long chain that connects them — traders, processors, transporters, retailers — determines who captures the value created along the way. For many producers, especially the smallest, the challenge is not growing food but reaching a fair market for it. Markets, Value Chains, Certification & Food Security is the session that follows produce from farm gate to final buyer and asks how that journey can work better for everyone.
Value chains can either lift farmers up or squeeze them out. Where producers are organised, informed, and able to meet quality and certification standards, they can access premium markets and capture more of the final value. Where they are isolated and dependent on a single buyer, they remain vulnerable. Strengthening agricultural markets and value chains means improving market access, transparency, and the ability to meet the standards that increasingly gate entry to higher-value trade. All of this feeds into the larger question of food security — whether food is available, accessible, and affordable for those who need it.
This session convenes market specialists, value-chain analysts, and food-security experts to connect the dots between trade and access. The programme covers market access and price dynamics, value-chain organisation and upgrading, certification and quality standards, food security and affordability, and the role of cooperatives and collective action. Participants at this Agriculture Conference will examine how fairer, more transparent chains can raise farmer incomes while keeping food affordable, and how certification, organisation, and market intelligence can shift bargaining power back toward producers.
